Communication
Communication
Overview
Communication is constantly moulding our reality, affecting how we live, work, and interact. With over 20 million mobile subscriptions against a population of 19.5 million as of 2021, communication is undoubtedly a key sector in the Zambian economy, playing a critical role in social and economic development. 2010 saw the introduction of mobile money services which have been a key driver of financial inclusion, which increased from 37% in 2009 to 69% in 2020. Low mobile penetration rates (56/100 inhabitants as of 2021) and a growing demand for mobile financial services indicate significant room for growth over the medium and long term. The country currently has three mobile network operators (MTN, Zamtel and Airtel) and a fourth operator, Beeline Telecoms was granted a license to enter the market. The sector is faced with several challenges including limited competition in the wireline sector, poor mobile and wireline coverage in rural areas, and regular consumer complaints about poor service standards.
By addressing these challenges and leveraging the country’s strong demographics, firms can actualize the potential of the communication sector, bringing it up to par with regional peers. This would have a positive impact on consumers and economic development. By embracing new technologies and service delivery strategies, businesses can unleash their full potential and advance the growth of the sector in Zambia.
At Red Black Ventures, we believe that unlocking the full potential of the communication sector requires a deeper understanding of the sector’s unique challenges and opportunities. We keep a close eye on market trends, gather data and work with organizations to beat back challenges and seize new opportunities to help them succeed in the sector.
