Overview
The power supply sector in Zambia is responsible for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity to households, businesses, and industries. It is a critical sector for the overall growth of other sectors such as mining, agriculture, trade, manufacturing, among others. The nation has an abundance of water resources, with the potential to generate 6 gigawatts of hydropower under normal rainfall conditions, and high solar power potential. However, the current power generating capacity stands at only 2.8 gigawatts, more than 50% less than the maximum potential. 85% of the current capacity is hydro-based while the other 15% is generated from thermal and solar power sources. The major challenges facing the sector are adverse periodic droughts leading to power shortages and loadshedding due to a high dependency on hydropower, and low investments in alternative sources of power.
By addressing these challenges and leveraging the strengths of the Zambian power supply sector, companies in both on- and off-grid applications can transform the sector to support the country's long-term growth while realizing sustainable value for their investment.
At Red Black Ventures, we believe that unlocking the full value of the Zambian power supply sector requires a deeper understanding of its unique challenges and opportunities. We keep a close eye on market trends, gather data, and work with businesses to develop effective strategies that help them succeed in the sector.
